Bells to ring on land mine anniversary

Land mines kill or maim about 500 people per week, according to the U.S. State Department. They deprive countless more of the land they need to make a living.

Many congregations worldwide will ring their church bells at noon March 1 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty banning land mines. Lutheran World Relief requested two peals: one for people endangered by mines, and another as a message calling on the U.S. government to commit to a complete ban on their manufacture, sale and stockpiling.
