Update: Hamre puts Pentagon behind him

Deputy Defense Secretary John Hamre, the second-highest civilian at the Pentagon, will switch focus from military tanks to a think tank when he becomes president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies March 31.

The bipartisan center, which focuses on issues of national security, has been "one of the Clinton administration's severest critics on military policy," according to the Chicago Tribune.

A member of Luther Place Memorial Church, Washington, D.C., Hamre was profiled by The Lutheran in April 1997. Last April he arranged for a contingent of Lutheran college students to visit the School of the Americas, Fort Benning, Ga., after he spoke at the Peace Prize Forum, co-sponsored annually by five Midwestern Lutheran colleges.
