ELCA bishop meets leader of 'CCM' opponents

"There's a confrontation coming [over Called to Common Mission], and we want to avoid it," said Roger Eigenfeld, pastor of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Mahtomedi, Minn., following a 90-minute private discussion Dec. 8 with ELCA Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson.

Eigenfeld, who asked for the meeting, is the steering committee leader for the WordAlone Network, which has pledged to "actively resist and never comply with demands of CCM," a proposal for full communion between the ELCA and the Episcopal Church.

Eigenfeld said 85 percent of those in the network want to stay in the ELCA, but the organization must work on two tracks: to prepare to leave the ELCA even as it tries to stay and change CCM's requirement that the denomination adopt the historic episcopate.
