About 220 miles south of Denver, San Luis is at the intersection of Colorado state highways 159 and 142. You need to drive to get there. From Denver take Interstate 25 south to Walsenburg, just over four hours. Turn west onto U.S. 160 for another hour and you'll cross the summit of La Veta pass, the southern gateway to the San Luis Valley. Fort Garland is the first town after the pass. The fort museum is worth a stop before you head south on Route 159 for 16 miles until it crosses Route 142 at San Luis. The town is just 70 miles north of Taos, N.M., a straight drive up on Route 159.
