At critical junctures in our lives — when we must make significant decisions, when we are grieving or celebrating — we often receive an unexpected invitation from God. It's a call away from our daily environment with its accompanying worries and responsibilities. It's a call to make a pilgrimage to a place apart where we can listen carefully to God's intimate voice. In response to that gracious invitation, I go to the Shrine of the Stations of the Cross in San Luis, Colo. That's where I went in September 1996 when I faced a major life decision.
