1. Lutherans approve three historic decisions on Christian unity. Lutheran and Roman Catholic representatives sign the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification
Oct. 31 in Augsburg, Germany. The ELCA enters into full communion with
the Moravian Church in America and adopts a full communion agreement
with the Episcopal Church, to be voted on by Episcopalians in 2000.
Many ELCA members object to the "historic episcopate" in the agreement
and seek to bypass it. 2.
The ELCA and other religious groups join the Jubilee 2000 campaign,
calling for cancellation of the international debts of poor nations.
