A depressing Middle East

Mutual mistrust bogs down peace hopes

There doesn't seem to be much hope for the Middle East. When I was there four years ago, soon after the triumphant signing of Israeli-Palestinian accords on the White House lawn, things were looking up. But two months ago, despite a joyous consecration of a new Lutheran bishop there, I could find little reason to expect progress toward peace.
