The Church of the Lutheran Brethren is founded and centered in the Midwest.


1903:

Two African American colleges open — Immanuel in Concrd, N.C., and Lutheran College in New Orleans.


1903:

F. Melius Christiansen, a pioneer in unaccompanied choral music, begins directing the St. Olaf Lutheran Choir.
