Get busy

A congregation facing organized hate doesn't have to hide behind church doors. Christ Lutheran Church, Libby, Mont., recommends these steps:

  • Fear not.

  • Find out what's going on. Research the groups. Talk to people and organizations with experience and expertise.

  • Work with groups that have the same outlook and interest as your church.

  • Emphasize tolerance for ethnic and cultural diversity throughout the life of the church and community.

  • Network with school officials to share information, identify resources and keep the issue in the curriculum.

  • Organize events for education and outreach about hate groups.

  • Publicize talks, panels, rallies and events to educate the community.

  • Teach tolerance in Sunday school, youth groups, adult forums, etc.
