Hate fighters

Lutherans are speaking out against evil

Vandals smashed four windows at Bethlehem Lutheran, Tacoma, Wash., and spray-painted graffiti on the church van after the pastor denounced racist hate groups in a newspaper article.

Jerry Walters risks such retaliation. The pastor of Bethlehem can't silently stand by and watch. "Indifference to evil can be seen as worse than the evil itself," he says. "Indifference allows evil erupting as an exception to be accepted as the norm."

That kind of courage appears to be needed more and more.
