Candles help initiate family prayer

Barbara and Mark Back have always said evening prayers with their children. But since they've added a candle to their family ritual, bedtime prayers have taken on new meaning.

"I tried having prayers without the candle, and the 3-year-old protested," Barbara said. "We're going to Disney World in a couple of weeks, and the kids are already making sure we pack the candle. They're not even talking about packing the toys."

The Backs are just one of 70 households at Lutheran Church of the Abiding Presence, Burke, Va., that now gather around a candle for prayer time.
