Step out in search of the sacred

At midnight, the light of 1,600 votive candles glows on the arms and faces of silent walkers circling the athletic track. It lifts shadows into grandstands that arch against the sky like buttresses. A sense of reverence and purpose hovers in the air, transforming an athletic venue into a cathedral.

Through daylight hours of the American Cancer Society's 24-hour Relay for Life fund-raiser, high-voltage music pumped a festive mood into the air as participants traveled the track. Campsite camaraderie bubbled from an infield dotted with colorful tents.
