Lutherans on the attack

Some sharp words are bruising us

Our church is taking it on the chin from our Lutheran cousins. The president of the Lutheran Church-­Missouri Synod is inviting disenchanted ELCA members to join the LCMS. A seminary professor of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod writes in that church's periodical that the "accepted public teachings of the ELCA depart from Scripture in almost every doctrine." Christian News, an ultraconservative tabloid edited by a Lutheran pastor in New Haven, Mo., published a "Death of the ELCA" issue.

Much of the reaction comes from our decisions last August to declare full communion with three Reformed bodies and our support of a joint declaration on justification by faith with the Roman Catholic Church.
