It's time to sing out in protest. While it's apparently in vogue to deny us pew-sitters the chance to sing Christmas carols during Advent's Sunday worship services, I say it's time for an Advent Reformation! Why do we have to go to the shopping mall to enjoy the Christmas music that our pastoral leadership is determined not to let our ears, voices and hearts share with the world?
I know the standard answer: It's printed in church bulletins and newsletters every time one of us shy pew-sitters dares to speak out. "Advent is the season of preparation. Of course we must not sing Christmas songs until Christmas is here."
Of course, never mind that it's nearly impossible to find a church that actually holds a worship service on Christmas Day so you can sing Christmas music on the day!
