This birth makes us odd

'You cannot serve God and wealth' (Luke 16:13)

In early September, the Internal Revenue Service audited my husband's and my taxes. The kind gentleman asking numerous questions and tallying our receipts explained that our return was suspicious because of the "large amount of charitable donations in comparison with the income level."

Why should that be a surprise? If we follow Jesus, who had "nowhere to lay his head," divesting ourselves of the burden of too much money and property is a great delight. But it probably does seem strange to those who buy into our culture's notion that happiness grows in proportion to the level of possessions.
