Mornings bring fog and clouds. As our car winds through redwoods up a mountain road outside Napa, Calif., the midmorning sun burns off the last cloud as we clear the forest. The sign on the lane reads "Norma's Vineyard."

Stretching across the hills ahead and the valley below are some of the finest vineyards in the world. Norma Carr claims 16 acres of chardonnay vines. Actor Robin Williams also has a vineyard on this road.
