'Give peace a chance'

Worship ritual extends to daily relationships

As the sadness of Sept. 11 moves with us into the season of "peace on earth," worshipers may take the opportunity to give peace a chance — at least on Sunday mornings.

In times of war and anxiety, the worship ritual of sharing the peace takes on new significance. The ancient practice (see left), which became an integral part of liturgical renewal in the '60s and '70s — just as the Beatles pleaded for listeners to Give Peace a Chance — is commonplace in most congregations today.

The words "The peace of the Lord be with you" may strike a chord of awkwardness in some bashful worshipers.
