When Jesus "Greg" Palacious, a 27-year-old paramedic for Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., returned from ground zero late Sept. 11 he had one thought: He needed a priest. "I got back here at 12:30 a.m. and wanted to speak to a priest. The comfort I received here made me able to go home," he said, nodding toward the "priest": Elsie Smith, an ELCA pastor and the chaplain on duty that day. Smith was also on hand when Dennis Laurie, 31, an emergency medical technician returned.
