Waiting, worry are part of a military family's life

Robert and Joyce wait and pray as U.S. military troops are deployed to Afghanistan, knowing that U.S. leaders are emphasizing that it will be a long process.

Sitting at home, they gaze at their three sons' photographs. Two are in military uniforms. Mostly, they worry about their eldest, Derek, 39, an expert in Arabic who has been deployed to parts unknown to them. Fearing for his safety, the couple did not wish their last name to be published.
