'I held the cup'

Serving communion gave widow joy'

Oct. 10 was the first time Donna Paolillo assisted with communion. It was also the burial service for her husband, John, a firefighter who went into the World Trade Center Sept. 11.

Only family and close friends gathered that day at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Glen Head, Long Island. A week before, Oct. 3, more than 500 people had crammed into the 200-seat church for Paolillo's memorial service. The chief of special operations, Manhattan Division 3, Battalion 11, Paolillo was "not your normal fireman," said Donna, explaining that his work took him nationwide teaching about public safety and anti-terrorism measures.
