To ground zero, with Thunder

Kent Olson lives thousands of miles from New York, but the member of Christ Lutheran Church, Lakewood, Wash., wasn't surprised when a call came Sept. 11 asking him and his golden retriever, Thunder, to help rescue workers at ground zero.

As workers for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Olson and Thunder often search locally for victims and survivors of avalanches and possible drownings. But this was the first time they had been sent so far away or had helped with a mission of this magnitude.
