A genuine family holiday

'Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers' (Hebrews 13:2)

For four long days I listened to participants in my seminary course on "suffering" as they sought counseling for personal troubles. The range of problems was immense and their depth overwhelming, but the seminary community seemed strong and genuinely assuring. When I asked students if they had a reliable source of support, almost all pointed to friends who had given good comfort and care.

Consequently, I was astonished when a gentle young man confided his anguish in being a single person in the seminary community. Surely not in this place! I had more than 100 students in my class, and this was the first time I'd heard this complaint.
