Lutheran and Episcopal campus ministries partner to face urban need

At St. Margaret's Episcopal Church's after-school program in the South Bronx, 30 kids hunker down over their homework in a gymnasium where tables and chairs have been set up beneath the basketball hoops.

Lutheran and Episcopal campus ministry students from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, stand in the doorway, unsure of what's expected. Except for one child, who sits alone at a table near the door, the children cluster in groups. They continue with their homework, their conversations. They ignore the strangers.
