Catherine Braasch, executive director of Women of the ELCA, joined other religious leaders at a White House breakfast Nov. 20. The topic was President Clinton's race initiatives. Clinton said affecting real societal change "requires spiritual depth, spiritual resources and spiritual conviction." The president said that within 50 years, perhaps sooner, "there will be no single racial group in the majority in the entire United States." Americans need to decide now how to deal with the problems arising from racial diversity, he added. Participants called on the administration to counter "demonizing rhetoric" against women of color who are on welfare. Clinton responded, "We can't expect women on welfare to go to work" without addressing matters of skills readiness and child-care services.
