Images of God

In each one, we glimpse God truly, but not completely

"Or what woman having 10 silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, "Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost" (Luke 15:8-9).

In this parable, Jesus describes God's extravagant compassion in the image of a woman searching thoroughly until she finds what has been lost and then celebrating the good news with her neighbors. In the Gospel, Jesus' own earthly welcoming of sinners corresponds to the heavenly household maintained by the woman in the parable.

Female images of God and the blending of female images with a male Jesus occur throughout the Bible.
