'We helped each other'

Building a church in El Salvador teaches California youth lessons in friendship

Rather than spend last year's Christmas vacation skiing or hanging out at the mall, five teenage boys from First Lutheran Church, Palo Alto, Calif., hauled bricks and shoveled cement in Central America.

They helped build a sanctuary for Rios de Agua Viva (Rivers of Living Water), First's sister parish in San Mauricio, El Salvador.

"We can go snowboarding anytime," said Leif Schmit-Kallas, 18, who called building the church "a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
