Open adoption gives children lifeline connections

Even before she blew out the big "6" candle on her Pocahontas cake, Caryn Blomquist's birthday wishes were comin g true. Her parents took her and her friends swimming at a pool and then brought them back home for a party, complete with hot dogs, games and presents.

Caryn is an adopted child. Unlike most Americans who were adopted as infants, however, there's one birthday wish Caryn will never have to make — not at 6 or 16 or even 60: "I wish I knew my 'real' mother."
