Orphans at the table?

Iowa congregation reflects the trend toward communing younger children

If you're a church-going Lutheran parent, you've played this scene: You're at worship. The ushers are guiding people forward to receive communion, and your 4-year-old decides it's time for a theological discussion: "Can I go up too?"

"Yes, honey, when mommy goes up. Pastor will give you a blessing. Remember?"

"Can I have communion too?"

"No, you're not ready yet."

"Why not? Why can't I?"

"Because you're too little."
