Brenda Bartella Peterson resigned as the Democrats' first religious outreach director Aug. 4 — after 13 days — saying she could no longer do her job effectively (September, page 8).
Her resignation followed criticism over her public positions by the New York-based Catholic League. In press releases, the group attacked her for signing, along with 31 other clergy, a "friend of the court" brief that supports removing the "under God" portion of the Pledge of Allegiance. The League also criticized positions on taxes and gay marriage taken by the Clergy Leadership Network, a platform for liberal clergy of which she is the former director.
Peterson, a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister, stated: "I continue to believe, as do leading faith leaders across the country, that John Kerry should be the next president ...."
