Palestine memorial: 'If we are not peacemakers'

Voting 953-58, the assembly called upon the new ELCA presiding bishop to ask the U.S. president and other officials to work to end Israeli-Palestinian violence, redirect U.S. funds for Middle Eastern military assistance toward humanitarian aid, and urge the immediate international protection of Palestinians under occupation.

Speaking in support of the memorial, Bishop Donald McCoid, Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod, said, "We need to remember that if we aren't people who are peacemakers, we [are] people who turn our heads."

The assembly also approved an amendment (831-160) calling for the "cessation of suicide bombing by Palestinian military factions."
