Latino, Asian strategies accepted

By a 983-8 vote, the assembly accepted a Latino ministry strategy that Maria del Rosario Valenzuela said "came from and represents us from our roots." Valenzuela is director for Hispanic ministries with the ELCA Commission for Multicultural Ministries.

Anna Purcella-Doll, Southeastern Synod, said a report isn't needed to prove that the church's mission field is changing. "You need only look outside the doors of your homes ... but it will take more than opening your doors. Don't let this be a nicely written report that sits on the shelves of our archives."

The assembly also accepted the Asian and Pacific Islander Ministry Strategy (948-6), which calls for the establishment of 40 more Asian congregations in the next eight years.
