Holy fearlessness

May we listen less to our fears than to God's grace

Thousands of words poured like a tidal wave from the 2001 Churchwide Assembly, but I will remember four: "I am not afraid." Spoken by newly elected Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson, they were the most hope-filled words I heard all week.

To some, they might suggest that he doesn't really understand or care about what's happening in the ELCA — or to himself. But during our interview, Hanson's words carried no whiff of ignorance, arrogance, apathy or delusion. They bore the pleasant fragrance of the blessed — of one who truly knows Christ.
