Challenging issues confront our church

This is my last column as presiding bishop, and rather than look back, I'd like to share my perspective on the future.I take my cue from Paul, who saw the church as a "work in progress." He wrote: "I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6).

We in the ELCA are a young church, organized in 1987 out of three earlier church bodies. I believe we are just beginning to realize the possibilities that have arisen out of that merger.
