Lutherans protest Israeli takeover of church

Israeli troops shelled and entered the West Bank town of Beit Jala on Aug. 28, taking over three Lutheran buildings, said Munib A. Younan, bishop of the 3,000-member Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan (and Palestine).

At 1:30 a.m., Israeli soldiers took over the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Reformation; the Evangelical Lutheran Home, an orphanage for 50 children; and an interreligious guesthouse, Younan said. "Soldiers took positions on the roof of one of the church buildings, with tanks stationed immediately outside the entrance to the church premises," he said. Unconfirmed reports say the soldiers killed two people and injured more than 10.
