Brauer dies at 78

Jerald C. Brauer, 78, an ELCA pastor and former dean of the University of Chicago Divinity School, died Sept. 26.

He taught the history of Christianity for 49 years, but was noted for recruiting scholars to the faculty and mentoring them. Brauer also turned the school from a Protestant institution to one representing a variety of faiths.

He co-edited the journal Church History for more than 30 years, and was president of the Board of Theological Education of the former Lutheran Church in America.

His wife and two sons survive him.
