FLOYD DAMAGE
South Carolina: Lutheran Social Services of the Carolinas is directing the Lutheran response in South Carolina as well as North Carolina. Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, Conway, served as a Red Cross center.
Bahamas: Homes of two members of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Freeport, were flooded with 6 ft. of water. Church members assisted with cleanup and distribution of supplies in Grand Bahama.
New Jersey: Flooding damaged hundreds of homes in Somerset County. Lutheran congregations are serving as collection points and distribution sites.
Virginia: Scattered damage. Faith Lutheran Church, Tidewater, reported two inches of water in the nave. Members of Trinity Lutheran Church, Newport News, were helping one another clean up and replace lost possessions.
Pennsylvania: Suburbs north and west of Philadelphia experienced flooding severe enough to close bridges. The basement of the parsonage of Ascension Lutheran Church, Washington Crossing, was flooded. Members of Upper Dublin Lutheran, Ambler, fed and comforted residents evacuated from around a reservoir.
As with most disasters, Lutherans quickly mobilized with other faith groups to help. Members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Greenville, N.C., prepared breakfasts for people at a nearby shelter. Christ the King Lutheran Church, Cary, N.C., raised $2,700 for assistance.
