CHIP in to make kids healthy

For the 10th national observance of Children's Sabbaths, Oct. 19-21, the Children's Defense Fund asks congregations to consider the 10.8 million children in the United States who don't have health insurance.

Officials are asking 200 denominations and religious organizations to get the word out about the Children's Health Insurance Program — or CHIP, which helps children in working families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid, but too low to afford private coverage. Sabbath sponsors urge people of faith to contact Congress to make sure states help those children not currently covered via the bipartisan-sponsored Act to Leave No Child Behind.
