October 1999 Letters: Reactions to Denver

CCM's passage draws mixed reviews

Despite highly organized, extremely vigorous and absolutely unrelenting opposition to it, the fact that Called to Common Mission was approved by the Churchwide Assembly in Denver can have but one explanation: "This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes" (Psalm 118:23). We should thankfully receive the historic episcopate because it's been part of the very fabric of the church's life from ancient times, the Lutheran reformers were indeed desirous of retaining it, and it guarantees nothing but symbolizes much. It's the outward and visible sign of the oneness of the church's ministry, a ministry of all times and all places.
