Kristine M. Gebbie, a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manhattan, N.Y., was the United States' first national AIDS policy coordinator--or AIDS czar--from 1993-94. She now teaches health policy at Columbia University School of Nursing, New York. The Lutheran interviewed her in July about the AIDS situation in Africa.
