Reading TV's 'sacred texts'

Americans consume 16,000 media messages a day. We need to learn not to be passive consumers.

Experts have identified a new "sacred text." It comes with a remote control. "Television is the most popular storyteller of our time," says Quentin Schultze, professor of media ethics at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich.

As a storyteller, television competes with the gospel as a purveyor of contemporary culture's values and beliefs, Schultze says.
