My brother's keeper

It costs to care for the mentally ill. Do we care?

Some day my brother will be our sole responsibility — unless the safety net for the mentally ill is mended. I wouldn't trade my baby brother for anybody. I would trade in a political system that punishes the mentally ill and politicians who continue to talk about "personal responsibility" without being responsible as a society for those who can't care fully for themselves.

I think often of Jesus' words about "the least of these" because I know them. They are my brother, his friends and other families who have the same needs as ours. I think of Jesus healing the mentally ill — and I wait for a society which will recognize that God intends for us all to be well.
