Caribbean: Death and hunger

Tropical Storm Jeanne caused considerable damage and loss of life across the entire Caribbean. In Haiti, the worst-affected country, the death toll from Jeanne surpassed 1,000. At presstime, another 1,000 people were still missing and 300,000 were homeless. Twenty-seven storm-related deaths were reported in the Dominican Republic. In Puerto Rico, nine people lost their lives.

The storm damaged buildings of several Caribbean Synod congregations. The synod is working with Lutheran Disaster Response and Church World Service, as well as with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to assess damages and determine what assistance might be required, either by the churches themselves or by individual families.
