With as many as 80,000 unaccompanied children crossing into the U.S. this year, the ELCA is working through Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service to find foster care and provide other services. Calling the situation a humanitarian crisis, LIRS President and CEO Linda Hartke said the causes of the “new exodus out of Central America are complex, with escalating violence and death an overwhelming threat.
