In April the ELCA awarded 401 grants totaling nearly $1 million through its ELCA World Hunger program to its congregations, social ministry organizations and community-based nonprofits for programs that fight poverty and hunger in the U.S. These funds are like “seed money in many places,” said Josselyn Bennett, ELCA director for poverty and justice ministries. But that’s only $1 million of the $19 million ELCA members gave to ELCA World Hunger in 2013. Most funds go toward international relief, education, advocacy and international development work — benefiting more than 800 million people across the globe who are chronically hungry.
