Ritual: Help or hocus-pocus?

Mixed reaction to stories on ritual

Your article, "Rite times" (July, page 10) baffles me. In particular I refer to the section, "Blessing the divorced." What part of Jesus' words regarding divorce did you not understand? You suggest that man must not only assist in separating a holy union but bless the act too.

Rituals may bring healing to those from Roman Catholic backgrounds, but as a lifelong Lutheran, I find the need for them to be pure hocus-pocus. Perhaps they are designed to increase the power of the priest, thereby increasing the distance between God and humans.
