The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

2 female presidents

As of July 1, four of the 26 ELCA college presidents will be women. Elected in February, Rebecca M. Bergman and Paula J. Carlson will serve Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., and Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, respectively — the first women presidents for both schools. They join presidents Janet Morgan Riggs of Gettysburg (Pa.) College and Laurie M. Joyner of Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio. Bergman, a Gustavus Adolphus board member and vice president of research, technology and therapy delivery systems at Medtronic Inc., succeeds Jack R. Ohle, who is retiring. Carlson, vice president for mission at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and a scholar of medieval and modern American literature, succeeds interim president David Tiede.
