The same day the Winona [Minn.] Islamic Center was destroyed by fire, founder Ahmed El-Afandi sat at a table in Central Lutheran Church discussing the welcome his community of faith had received. “[It’s] beyond description,” he told the Winona Daily News of Central’s decision to offer its worship space after the center was destroyed by fire Sept. 13. “It’s very big of them.” Central and First Congregational Church both offered space before the flames had even died down. “Let’s make [this] an opening-up for better relationships with our neighbors,” El-Afandi said.
