The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Gathered in the grass

More than 100 women theologians were among 15,000 participants gathered Aug. 27-Sept. 1 in Antsirabe, Madagascar, for the National Women’s Gathering of the Malagasy Lutheran Church. The theologians, who continue to bring attention to the issue of women’s ordination, led Bible studies. The Malagasy Lutheran Church doesn’t ordain women. With no church building large enough to hold the gathering, women sat each day in a grassy field. Elaine Neuenfeldt, from the Lutheran World Federation’s Women in Church and Society desk, said the gathering was “powerful” and brought to mind “the biblical image of a multitude following Jesus and sitting on the grass.”
