Synod elects Froiland

Elected: Mary Stumme Froiland, 55, as bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin, effective Nov. 1.

When: Sept. 28 on the fifth ballot with 200 votes at a special meeting of its assembly. Bryan Engfer, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Atkinson, Wis., received 177 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Luther Valley Lutheran Church, Beloit, Wis. Served another congregation in Wisconsin and one in Ohio. Earned degrees from Augsburg College, Minneapolis, and Luther Northwestern Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.

Replaces: Bruce Burnside, who faces trial, accused of hit-and-run, drunken driving in the death of a woman.
