I've always prayed before operations — but silently. That changed after a trip to Swaziland on a mission trip. Prayer is always offered there before operations in the mission hospitals. Returning to the United States, I started praying with my patients. Sometimes I pray in their room before surgery. Sometimes I join their pastor and family in prayer. Other times I pray just before anesthesia.
